This Silver World was commissioned by a consortium of alumni band directors from Campbellsville University, led by the Campbellsville University Wind Ensemble in loving memory of recently-passed director Jennifer L. Tinnell.

This Silver World captures the shimmering joy that Jennifer brought to any space. The minimal percussive presence in the work represents the felt absence of her life and the tremendous gift that she was to all family, friends, colleagues, and students who are forever changed by her love for each of them and the music she shared.

The work is a short, sparkling, yet introspective fanfare, that takes its title from my mentor and first composition teacher, Francis McBeth. I recall during my lessons with him he mentioned that he wanted someday to write a piece with this title that would feature bright, sparkling, metallic percussion. Unfortunately, he never got the opportunity to compose the work. In thinking of how to honor Jennifer Tinnell and her evident mentorship and leadership to the Campbellsville University band community over 20 years, this seemed a fitting way to connect to my own reverence for a teacher, mentor, and friend who has passed.
