Instrumentation:
OrchestraFor several years, I’d considered arranging Alchemy in Silent Spaces for full symphony orchestra. The work’s delicacy and warmth seemed like it would find a natural home in the presence of a string section, so when James DePreist, after hearing the band version, first suggested the arrangement (without knowing I had long planned to do so), it became inevitable. I have rewritten the second movement from scratch, using only string orchestra and solo flute, while the first and third movements are scored for full symphonic orchestra, and remain very similar to their original wind ensemble counterparts.
I’m indebted to Maestro James DePreist for his generosity in giving me this opportunity, for his interest in new music, and for bringing this work to life with passion and love.
