Join us TOMORROW on the campus of Butler University in the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts for our first concert of the Fall 2023 semester.
The BUWE opens our season with “From the mountains to the sea” featuring a variety of composers and styles to showcase the abilities of the wind ensemble. We open with a consortium premier of Juan Pablo Contreras’ “La Silla.” If you were with us last year, you already know Juan Pablo’s music, and will not be surprised by this excellent concert opener. We follow this with a world premiere by Butler University alumni, Sean Alan Sumwalt Commissioned for the 100th anniversary of BU Bands, we will give the long overdue premiere of this commission. Another United State Premiere closes the first half of the concert with Yukiko Nishimura’s “Bright Moon.” This excellent work showcases the virtuosity of the players and gives an insight to American Jazz music through the lens of a Japanese American composer.
The second half of the program includes masterworks from the Wind Ensemble Repertoire. We open with a pair of Percy Aldridge Grainger’s works; Country Gardens and Colonial Song, each a whimsical melody that showcases the colors of the ensemble. Finally, we close the program with Steven Bryant’s prolific work for wind ensemble from 2009, Ecstatic Waters, featuring a fully immersive experience of wind ensemble and electronics. This is a work you won’t want to miss!
