This Duet started as an exercise in writing patient, unadorned music that allows the performer leeway for interpretation. This original version is for two Cellos, and was recorded one afternoon in May, 2019 at my house by extraordinary musician and my longtime friend Caroline Stinson. I did not want to dictate pulse, so she played both parts without any click or reference, other than her own internal since of time.

This version also works as-is for two Bassoons. During the Covid-19 pandemic quarantine, I’ve been making versions for many other instrument combinations.

In 2024, Caroline suggested performing the piece live, using the 2nd part as a pre-recorded accompaniment. Again, because of her impeccable sense of internal timing, she was able to perform it without click or reference. Here’s a lovely video from that performance:
