This Duet started as an exercise in writing patient, unadorned music that allows the performer leeway for interpretation.

This version for Clarinet in Bb and Bass Clarinet (the original is for two Cellos) is one of many I’ve made during the Covid-19 pandemic quarantine, and was recorded beautifully by the Égide Duo (Stefanie and Joshua Gardner). At about the same time, George Floyd was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis, and the subsequent protests spurred Josh and Stefanie to put together a simple, somber video accompanied by their recording of this work (below).
